Harpya (1979) | Dir. Raoul Servais | 9 min.
Every day in October, a recommendation from John D’Amico of a horror movie or TV episode available for free on YouTube. Enjoy:
A man rescues a drowning woman only to learn that she’s not quite what she seems and, like so many great horror stories, she needs to feed. Like a breathing nightmare, the Cannes-winning Harpya uses all the little quirks of how cameras capture images to rattle you. It’s all atmosphere, in a sort of living stop-motion drowned in blackness that keeps you simultaneously rapt and repelled by the unsettling beauty of it all.
